Why should you recycle CFLs?
As energy-efficient lighting becomes more popular, it is important that we dispose of the products safely and responsibly. Proper recycling ensures the benefits of CFLs while properly managing the disadvantages.

Compact fluorescent lights contain trace amounts (an average of 5 mg) of mercury vapor -- it's what makes the bulbs energy efficient -- an amount the size of the period at the end of this sentence. Because they contain mercury, the bulbs should be disposed of properly; ideally recycled.

Where can I recycle my CFL?
Focus on Energy has partnered with the world's largest environmental service company to offer a solution. Focus representatives are providing interested retailers with recycling containers as part of a new, no-cost CFL recycling program for their customers.

Use our retailer search to find retailers participating in the CFL recycling program. Choose 'CFL Recycling' as the store type in the drop down box.   You can still recycle your bulb even if there are no retailers partnering with Focus on Energy in your area.

EPA recommends that consumers take advantage of available local recycling options for compact fluorescent light bulbs. Consumers can contact their local municipal solid waste agency directly, or visit www.epa.gov/bulbrecycling or www.earth911.org to identify local recycling options.
