Schools and Government Programs

What is the Focus on Energy Schools and Government Program?

The Schools & Government Program is a partnership with the state of Wisconsin to advance the installation of cost-effective energy improvements in public schools, private schools, colleges, universities and state/local government facilities. Focus on Energy offers these organizations services to identify, select, and implement energy improvement projects.

What are the advantages of energy efficiency?
Energy efficiency saves money on energy bills—money schools can redirect toward educational needs. Energy efficiency also improves occupant comfort, leading to improved learning and productivity. Focus on Energy is a valuable resource to schools through its independent advice and years of experience. Focus also offers the security of an independent review of an energy cost-benefit study, as well as comparative review of lender bids for project financing.

Why should public schools use this program?
In 1993, the Wisconsin Legislature imposed a revenue cap on public school districts. The cap restricted the annual deviation of revenues from state and local sources. Therefore, the use of a lease purchase agreement allows energy-related capital improvements to be financed while staying within the legislated revenue cap and without having to go to referendum.

Tip of the Month:

Adjust hot water temperatures.
Unless high temperature levels are required by code, set water heater temperatures to 120°F. Each 10 degree Fahrenheit reduction in water temperature will generally save three to five percent on water heating costs.
